The Connecticut Student Innovation Expo is a competition for high school students that produce some of the most compelling projects that address contemporary problems with innovative solutions. We are a 9th grade Expo team from the Engineering and Science University Magnet School competing in the Science and Technology category. Our team, Solar Evolution, is dedicated to improving education worldwide, specifically in underdeveloped countries.

We have designed a project to help the people of Guinea. Currently, only 22% of women and 38% of men over the age of 15 can read and write. With the constant need to work and provide for their families, these individuals do not have time to get the proper education that every person should have the right to.

With the Mirror Lotus, a solar panel of our design, we have created a way to generate that most amount of energy in a very efficient and easy way. The Mirror Lotus mimics a biological process called heliotropism. This process allows plants, such as flowers, to follow the sun in order to maximize the amount of light they absorb every day. In addition to the full range of movement demonstrated by these panels, we also placed side panels on the Mirror Lotus to collect even more sunlight. This new take on an existing technology greatly increases the electricity output as compared to a traditional solar panel. With the Mirror Lotus, communities without electricity can have access to light at a minimal cost to funders.

This new revolutionary angle to the solar industry is not only more effective, but it will also demonstrate something very important about solar technology to those at home.  In America, solar technology has been slow to catch on as a cost effective alternative energy. Using our Mirror Lotus, Solar Evolution hopes to show just how useful, essential, and effective this technology is.

Please join us at the Connecticut Student Innovation Expo on May 14th at the Oakdale Theater! The event is free to the public.
